Bars around Singapore Club Street have been popping up on a regular basis over the last couple of years, making this one of Singapore’s best places to go bar-hopping right in the heart of Chinatown. Most of our handpicked entries specialise in quality cocktails, but with fine food, lively music and impressive interior designs all thrown into the mix, these bars offer so much more than just shaken up booze and juice in a glass.

Find the ever-hip and happening Club Street by walking up Cross Street from the nearby Teylok Ayer MRT station. Alternatively, walk up the pretty Ann Siang Hill (which is so close, we have also considered it within this list of bars on Club Street).

Dinner and a movie take on a new meaning at Screening Room in Singapore, where the house chefs pair the menu with the film. The open-air rooftop is a beautiful spot for after-screening drinks offering great views over the Temple of the Tooth and Club Street.

Screening Room is easy to find, around a 10-minute walk from the MRT at Chinatown. This area is architecturally one of the most historically significant in the city and the Screening Room’s imposing terracotta facade fits beautifully amongst the shop-houses. Behind the white shutters, there are 4 floors with a series of different entertainment venues, and an internal staircase with movie posters running alongside it.

One of the most recognisable bars around Club Street with its almost billboard-like exterior fronting a grey-on-white colonial building, Oxwell and Co. serves up a fine range of cocktails and mains all in some rather flamboyant settings.

Sitting near the corner of Ann Siang Hill and Club Street, this self-proclaimed gastrobar has numerous area all offering something a little a different, including a rooftop dinging area for a more formal setting, downstairs bar and some alfresco seating outside. House drinks are all poured from some pretty quirky plumbing-style taps, including their own Oxhorn Larger (S$12), as well as Pimms, sangria and Prosecco. There’s also a study range of pub grub as well as free bar bites when you spend enough.

Step inside this converted shop house and you’ll instantly feel like you’ve escaped the city, with its bright warm colours, tropical garden greenery, jungle props and giant Buddhist statues dotted around the spacious bar.

Downstairs, you’ll find more of a relaxed vibe, with a mix of city workers and young locals lounging around with a pint or cocktail in hand, while the upstairs IndoChine Restaurant presents a slightly more formal dining experience. In fitting with the decor, the menu encompasses most parts of Southeast Asia, full of Vietnamese, Thai, Laotian and Cambodian delights that we can’t pronounce. Fortunately, there is a translation provided and so we can recommend their green curry with duck (S$24), crispy soft shell crab (S$30) and of course, sticky rice with mango for dessert (S$10).

Open: Monday–Thursday from midday to 1 am, Fridays from midday to 2 am, Saturdays from 3 pm to 2 am (closed on Sundays)

    Gem Bar and Lounge

    • Nightlife

Gem Bar has really evolved from to your run-of-the-mill after-work drinking spot to one of the most lively and diverse bars around Club Street. The smart Victorian-themed decor and cute outside alfresco garden are well and good, but what’ll really make you coming back to Gem Bar is their generous drinks promos and the line-up of quality DJs throughout the week.

Monday is S$5 happy hour all night long; Tuesday is buy-one-get-one-free on house drinks, and cocktails are all S$8 each all night on Thursday. In-house DJs play house, tech, dub, hip-hop and funk from Wednesday-Saturday, further bringing this once ordinary Club Street bar to life. As for the food, think posh pub grub like burgers, pizzas, fish and chips and sausages and mash (most mains S$15-25).
