Phuket is one of the most picturesque parts of Thailand, with many romantic photo spots across the island. If you're enjoying the wonderful scenery with equally wonderful company, a photo will help you relive that memory when you return home. It comes as no surprise that there are many parts of Phuket serving as backdrops for professional wedding shoots.

We've listed our favourite places to get some snaps with our loved ones below. Phuket's viewpoints do not necessarily make good places for romantic photos. Beautiful scenery will often be lost behind a gorgeous portrait, particularly if it's a broad panoramic view. While you should certainly check out our list of Phuket’s best viewpoints if you want to enjoy the stunning scenery, this list consists of places you can go to take a romantic holiday photo.

While Phromthep Cape is the more famous viewpoint in southern Phuket, it usually gets crowded around sunset, which ruins the romantic atmosphere. Windmill Viewpoint is just around the corner and is significantly quieter. The view is also very good – arguably better than Phromthep – with Ya Nui and Nai Harn beaches beneath you, the bay full of yachts and boats, the sunset right ahead, and the striking wind turbines towering above and behind you.

Bon Island has just about everything you need for the perfect romantic tropical photos, including deserted white-sand beaches, swaying palm trees, clear blue seas, and traditional longtail boats. With just a small restaurant and limited facilities, Koh Bon is generally a pleasant place to visit, whether it’s for a romantic photoshoot or just to enjoy a peaceful and relaxing beach day.

Surin Beach is one of Phuket’s swankier areas, with lovely soft sand that's backed by tropical almond, maritime pine and palm trees on 1 side, and the azure Andaman Sea on the other. The 750-metre-long beach is pretty much pristine along its entire length, but the rocky and tree-topped headland at the northern end is particularly nice for a romantic photoshoot.

Laem Singh Beach is among the most picturesque coves along Phuket’s west coast. You'll need to pay a small fee to access the beach, though this doesn’t seem to put many people off. When it comes to romantic pictures, large and smooth rocks dotting the sand offer a nice bit of texture and something to pose on, while the verdant hillsides and nodding palm trees create a lovely natural backdrop. Laem Singh Beach is especially popular around sunset, as is the viewpoint up on the coast road – just a few hundred metres further along from the beach access – which overlooks the cove.

The old streets of Phuket Town are known for their historical charm, attracting those looking to shoot romantic pictures during their holiday. Thalang Road and Soi Rommanee are the most colourful parts of town, though Phang Nga Road is significantly quieter and has more beautiful buildings. A must-see is The Memory at On On Hotel, which was the first hotel on Phuket. It also famously appeared in The Beach (2000), which starred Leonardo Di Caprio. Thanks to its airy courtyard, time-worn walls and old-fashioned grandeur, the old Sino-Portuguese building is a fantastic setting for romantic snaps.

The tree-lined beach of Kata Noi is one of Phuket’s finest, with soft sand, rocky headlands and beautiful blue waters. It's also relatively quiet, making it a lovely romantic spot in Phuket. Kata Noi Beach is also surrounded by many excellent spots for taking photos, such as the quiet sunset bars along the hillside road. While this road leads to the popular Karon Viewpoint, it's better suited to landscape photography than romantic portraits.

Phromthep Cape is one of the most photographed locations in Phuket. It can get very crowded around sunset, which might put you off if you want to take romantic photos. However, you’ll probably see at least one couple taking their pre-wedding shoot. Even with the crowds, the rugged southern tip of the island is certainly worth seeing. Posing for a few shots is possible if you're lucky enough. The rocky cape itself, with its tall palm trees and the tiny Koh Kaeo Yai just off the coast, makes a striking backdrop, particularly when bathed in the sunset glow.

Nai Yang Beach offers a nice natural backdrop for romantic photos in Phuket. Part of Sirinat National Park, the beach is shaded with tall casuarina trees. The long beach has plenty of quiet areas for picnics with striking scenery, including tree-lined sand, colourful boats, and even planes landing at Phuket International Airport. The spot of sand right at the end of the runway offers really dramatic photo opportunities as aircraft pass barely 30 metres overhead.

The viewpoint just before Big Buddha

While Big Buddha certainly offers good views, it's usually very busy and too religious to be considered a romantic photo spot in Phuket. There's a tiny restaurant by the side of a road, located just a few turns before you reach the famous attraction. Just a few steps away, you can find an isolated boulder out on the cliff, which makes for excellent romantic photos, especially at sunset. Naturally, with no safety barriers and a steep drop, be very careful when taking photos at this spot.
