Pros - Convenient location. Great shops and restaurants nearby. - Comparable onsite garage parking fees - Good size room for the suite we booked with a kitchen - Good customer service during one night where I phoned the front desk about an issue Cons - The place is a bit dated for my liking - Shower took quite some time for the water to heat up - Day 4 (Sat) of our stay. Upon our return in the afternoon, the room reeked of a sewage smell. We instantly opened the windows and went down to the lobby to notify the front desk immediately and they caught an attitude with my husband when he asked if they needed anything else from us while we stood there waiting for a response. They did inform us that all the rooms were booked and we were waiting on them to tell us they would send maintenance to check on it. But we just stood there in silence while they were checking for available rooms (even though they just said they were fully booked). Instead, I asked if they can send someone to at least check it out while we’re gone. They said yes. But the whole interaction was annoying af. Came back and a different rep told us they sent someone to check it but couldn’t provide me any updates as they just started their shift but the hotel did put a room on hold for us just in case the smell didn’t go away. Luckily it did. This whole experience was off putting as I’ve never experienced sewage smell in a hotel room and I travel a lot for work and leisure.

Quirky & Clean
My wife and I enjoyed staying at the Mark Spencer. It was kinda quirky. The shower had a half door which aim still trying to figure out. The guest parking in the garage was interesting to say the least. If you have a car bigger than a matchbox, you need to be patient getting in and out of parking spots. They’re quite small. The room was clean which is most important. The beds are comfortable but squishy, probably ready to be upgraded. Overall it suited out needs, and we’d stay there again.

If you’re headed to Portland and craving a place with soul, check into the Mark Spencer Hotel. This isn’t your cookie-cutter spot. Nestled in the heart of the Pearl District, it’s been around since 1907 and wears the years well—like an old friend who’s got a few stories and isn’t afraid to share them. The place exudes an eclectic charm, a fitting vibe for a city that prides itself on being just left of center. We were in town to catch a show at the Moda Center, and the Mark Spencer turned out to be the ideal basecamp. It’s steps away from Powell’s City of Books, a cathedral of literature so vast you could lose yourself for hours. Around the corner, some of Portland’s best food spots await, from cozy coffee shops to bustling breweries. It’s a hotel for travelers who want to feel Portland’s pulse up close. Our corner room was big, comfortable, and refreshingly authentic. None of that minimalist decor nonsense you find in ‘hip’ hotels—this place actually has character. And while the parking garage might test your skills with its tight spaces, it adds a dash of challenge, making every exit and entry a small victory. For a taste of true Portland, forget the chains and stay here. You’ll feel like you’ve earned your spot at the table, just as Portland would want it
