San Francisco and related destinations

Fog rolls across the Golden Gate Bridge while cable cars clank up impossibly steep hills lined with candy-colored Victorian houses. At Pier 39, sea lions bark and pose as if auditioning for wildlife documentaries. The Mission's muralists transform walls into canvases while locals debate which taqueria serves the definitive burrito. Alcatraz broods in the bay, its audio tour narrated by former guards and inmates. Golden Gate Park hides surprises around every bend – Japanese gardens, actual bison, and museums where you could happily lose an afternoon. The Pickwick Hotel

The Pickwick Hotel

8/10 Good
"Tired basic hotel. Clean and fairly good value for money. Air con worked but rattled a bit. We had no cleaning service on Sunday just a bit under the door saying due to high occupancy we are unable to service your room. I had to phone and go down for more coffee pods. Choice maker and small fridge in rooms which was nice. Very good location with bus rides and train station all 2 minute walk. Large supermarket within 7-10 min walk."

"Very nice hotel! Right in Union Square. Beds were very hard and pillows kind of sucked. But overall the rooms were nice and very clean. We were on the 29th floor which was a cool view Parking is horrible and because we have a bigger truck they couldn’t valet it and had no idea how to help us and just kind of left us to figure it out, Thankfully we found ONE garage down the street that took bigger vehicles (thanks ChatGPT for finding it)."

"Great location, just about a block from Oracle park, we walked to the game in 5 min, bars and restaurants around as well. Clean rooms, nice patio and great included breakfast. If we had any complaints it is that our room was very small, and we were there on a pretty hot weekend and the windows don’t open and you couldn’t make it cooler in the room. Other than that it was great, and we will probably be back one day."

Chancellor Hotel on Union Square

Chancellor Hotel on Union Square

10/10 Excellent
"The Chancellor Hotel has a great location on the Powell Street cable car line, half a block from Union Square and four blocks from Market Street. It's an old hotel, built 100 years ago, so the hallways are irregular and the elevator seems ancient. But everything works. The hotel doesn't serve breakfast -- I recommend the croissants at One65 on O'Farrell Street, two blocks away -- but it does serve drinks at night. They also offer cookies, apples, a coffee machine and lemon-infused cold water in the lobby (although a couple of times they were out of the water). They also have a machine in the lobby to fill water bottles. The hotel notes that they don't have air conditioning. That's generally not a problem. The rooms do have ceiling fans that help when it's warm. I'd stay there again."
