Sarajevo is a city that you almost certainly most associate with war if you were born in or before the late 1980s. Being besieged for nearly 4 years certainly gave the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina a distinctive character, but its important position as a meeting point of Asian and European cultures over the past centuries has had a more lasting and noticeable impact. You can see this in the eclectic Old Town and the beautiful old churches, synagogues and mosques built almost next to each other.

But Sarajevo is more than just its history. In fact, it’s a very friendly and welcoming place. The compact city has a cosmopolitan feel, with a fun nightlife, a longstanding coffee culture and some really striking modern buildings.
