Top neighborhoods in Montreal

Plateau Mont-Royal

The Plateau Mont-Royal buzzes with creative energy that hits you the moment you turn a corner. Colourful murals splash across building walls while iconic spiral staircases wind up Victorian facades. Wander down Saint-Denis Street to find sidewalk cafés packed with locals chatting in French. Mont-Royal Park offers wooded trails with stunning city views when you need a breather from the artistic buzz. This area serves up everything from cheap bagels to fancy bistro meals without breaking your stride. Most attractions sit within easy walking distance, with Mont-Royal and Sherbrooke metro stations nearby when your feet need a rest. Boutique B&Bs and vacation rentals in converted row houses make perfect home bases for exploring this quintessentially Montreal experience.

Quartier des Spectacles

Quartier des Spectacles pulses with artistic energy where Montreal's cultural heart beats loudest. Place des Arts anchors this entertainment zone with multiple performance halls, while the streets transform for major festivals like Jazz Fest and Just for Laughs. Digital art installations light up building facades at night, creating an ever-changing outdoor gallery. The Museum of Contemporary Art adds a modern touch to this French-Canadian cultural playground. Food trucks and bistros cater to theatre crowds, with many offering pre-show specials. Getting around is a breeze with three metro stations and pedestrian-friendly plazas designed for festival crowds. Boutique hotels provide the perfect base for exploring this walkable area where performances continue well into the evening.

Old Montreal

Old Montreal dazzles with cobblestone streets and European charm that makes you feel like you've stepped back in time. The stunning Notre-Dame Basilica towers over the area while street performers entertain crowds at Place Jacques-Cartier. Along the waterfront, the Old Port area offers scenic promenades and boat tours that show off the St. Lawrence River from every angle. French bistros and cozy cafés fill historic limestone buildings with mouthwatering aromas and warm conversation. Getting around is a breeze on foot, though the uneven cobblestones might have you reaching for comfy shoes. Boutique hotels housed in heritage buildings provide the perfect blend of historic charm and modern comfort.

Downtown Montreal

Downtown Montreal pulses with energy from the gleaming concert halls of Place des Arts to the Gothic Revival spires of Christ Church Cathedral. Saint-Catherine Street buzzes with shoppers diving into neon-lit storefronts. The Underground City offers a fascinating labyrinth of shops and restaurants beneath your feet, perfect for escaping winter weather. Bell Centre lights up with hockey games and concerts that draw passionate crowds. Upscale steakhouses and French bistros dominate the dining scene with poutine readily available for a true Canadian experience. Business hotels and luxury chains provide comfortable places to crash after exploring. With excellent metro connections at Peel, McGill, and Place-des-Arts stations, getting around couldn't be easier.

Mile End

Mile End blends historic charm with artsy edge in this cultural hotspot of Montreal. Colourful Victorian buildings with iconic outdoor staircases line streets buzzing with indie record shops and vintage boutiques. The aroma of wood-fired bagels from St-Viateur and Fairmount wafts through air filled with multilingual chatter, while Saint Laurent Boulevard showcases vibrant street murals and galleries. Food options range from authentic Greek tavernas and Portuguese grills to trendy brunch spots and Jewish delis. Most shops and cafés open Tuesday through Sunday, with Monday closures common. Getting around is easy with nearby metro stations, multiple bus routes, and BIXI bike-share stations throughout this walkable area.

6/10 Okay
"The front desk staff warmly welcomed me upon arrival, which I appreciated. However, when I asked questions regarding the CA$200 deposit for the property, they suddenly became impolite and brushed off my concerns. They even forgot to give me my hotel key card. I understand that many tourists probably ask the same questions, but it is still their responsibility to respond politely. Fortunately, when I checked out, a different staff member assisted me. He was friendly and kind enough to answer my questions. The location is convenient, as it is close to 2 subway stations. I was able to walk to major spots such as Chinatown, the Basilica, Old Port, Eaton Shopping Mall, etc. The hotel offers free Wi-Fi, although it was not as fast as I had hoped. The room I stayed in was spacious, with a fair-sized TV, adequate lighting, a large sofa, and a fridge. The bed was comfortable for the night. However, the room did not include a kettle, microwave, safety box, or ice machine. The bedsheets and towels looked clean, which was a relief. Unfortunately, there is no housekeeping service on weekdays. The amenities include two hand soap bars and one soap dispenser for hair/conditioner/body wash. The walls are not soundproof, so you can hear construction outside the hotel. In the end, you get what you pay for, so don’t expect too much. While the location is convenient and the price is budget-friendly, the rooms are basic and somewhat outdated. "

"A solid 3 star, imo. Service was very good. Room was clean enough and good enough, but appears the refurbishment was a few years ago. Of the 2 rooms, one bathroom door didn't close for example. Breakfast was unexpectedly quite good. It was very close to the subway making it a great location to stay while visiting downtown for a game or concert...which was our need. In the end, for the price, i would go back."

"The hotel was very busy but the room was very quiet and clean. I was in town for a conference and the hotel was a a nice 20 minutes away on foot. I took the train to Montreal and the hotel is across the street from Central Station. The hotel is connected underground to the Metro (subway) and the underground city. "
