believe the other bad reviews — it was as bad as people say. we stayed here for a wedding. booked a swim up pool room which was the best option. our friends had the jacuzzi room and they said it was moldy and dirty they didn’t even get in. our tub was dirty, mold every where, the shower was overwhelmingly stinky, found a spider in our bed. not only was the room outdated it was straight up dirty. you can have old things but still keep them clean. we could check out of here fast enough. the workers were also some of the rudest people i’ve encountered at a resort. so much attitude and we watched them repeatedly serve white guests before us. we swam up to the bar and the bartender took orders from 4 white people groups that came after us. stay away unless you love the smell of mildew.

completely mismanaged resort
We visited to attend a wedding of our friends which was hosted at the resort. The food was decent, but beverages were cheap liquor with tons of sweeteners. The cleanliness and upkeep of the property was horrible. The kitchen was filled with roaches; the bar staff would throw cups into a lake of water and reach in to grab them with their bare hands to pour you a new drink as if they were clean. My two year old spent the first night vomitting everywhere, and was sick most of the rest of the trip presumably from food poisoning. When asked to change our sheets due to the vomit, we discovered one day later that all had not been changed and there was still vomit on some of them. But the biggest downfall by far was the service. check in was a nightmare and our room wasn’t ready. we were told we had a butler with our room and that he would contact us. we gave our number to three people. We never heard or saw our butler until 36 hours into our stay. Room wasn’t stocked with dishes or glasses. When we asked our butler he brought us two glasses. maids took them and didn’t replace them. was pretty much like this the entire trip. No one knew when or where places were and were open, couldn’t even get a straight answer to find bathroom. Every room service order was screwed up, not on time, missing items. Every time we brought up issues it was “that’s not my job.”. we spoke to a couple from Indiana who had been there every year for 10 yrs and they told us never again

Didn’t hate it. Didn't love it. Wouldn’t return
I didn’t hate my stay, but I’m not eager to return. The service in general was just fair - the swim up bar would have 4-5 workers behind it at almost any given time but only one guy serving, who seemed stressed cause it was always so busy. I went to guest services a couple of times and same thing, a few people there but one waiting on us. The coffee shop, same thing. Gift shop prices for snacks was absolutely absurd. I’ve seen high prices before; you just know for the convenience they’re gonna be high but a red bull, $10 USD, a bag of chips, $17 USD.. Tried paying the environmental tax in pesos (we are in Mexico after all) however they refused their own currency & would only accept USD. As someone that doesn’t even use USD, this was frustrating & stupid.. I’m in Mexico, let me use YOUR currency. My room was in a not-so-new building & the first night I went to get something out of my suitcase I saw bugs, so I moved my suitcase and found even more, then started removing my clothes from my suitcase and they were falling out of my clothes. I had a little bit of coffee left in my cup & the next morning there were about 8 bugs floating in it. The food was delicious, the buffet had tons of options. Drinks weren’t bad. The waitress around the pool was fantastic. FYI for the beach - you will not get crystal clear water here in south Cancun, it’s murky but there wasn’t any sargassum.

Resort is a bit dated but bed was comfortable, shower was great, and everything was in working order. Great staff. Buffet was very good and dinner at the steakhouse was excellent. Main complaint is too loud music in the pool area. But was great value for what we paid.

Great family trip
We went here on the recommendation of others. Service was great and it was definitely a lot of fun for the kids. The splash pad and slide for our three and six year-old were fantastic. The place is a bit dated, but it looks as though they’re trying to do some renovations. Our room was a bit Moldy, smelling or mildew and we asked for a change, but they were completely booked so that was not possible. My wife did get to go to the spa one day and raved about it. For no inclusive resort, the food was very good. It was fresh and the buffet was predictable. We did have a chance to eat at four of the restaurants all of which were really good with the exception of the Asian restaurant took way too long for service, which was a shame because the food was good For the price point it wasn’t a bad deal.

Our Flair82616 was late for 4 hours, I called front desk to reported the late arrival . We booked presidential ocean view suite for four people. But when my family arrived in midnight , they gave us a bigger room with jungle view without explanation. only one king bed, sofa bed is empty, no mattress, no bedding sheet, I called over 6 times and waited for another 3 hours to get everything for sleep. The second morning, we found the room is jungle view with smelly dead water puddle under the balcony, lots of misquotes. We waited another 3 hours in front desk yo ask a change, finally they agree to change a pool view on the third night , but when we returned from XCaret to the new room at 10:00 pm, same thing happened, no bedding in Sofa bed, I called over 10 times, that made us dipper exhausted and upset, finally my husband went to a housekeeping cart to grab bedding sheets, it was 1:30 am already. Very mess management, they treat customers so reckless, looked nice smiling face, but so careless and impatient, not professional at all. the house keeping and front desk service ruined all our 5 days staying. I will never , ever live there again.

This is our second time staying at the Royalton Riviera and for purchasing a 2 bedroom Presidential Suite all it was is two side by side rooms. The advertisement says it is over 1,800 square feet and it wasn’t. The showers were dirty, had grime in the corners and the master shower wouldn’t drain. The doors did not lock without slamming them and none of the patio doors locked. We came back to the room one night to find we had no power and waited hours for someone to come reset a breaker. For buying what was supposed to be a “Presidential Suite” it felt like we got stuck in the farthest away corner in the older, more run down rooms.

Guest treatment and follow up could improve
This is not our first time to Royalton but this time guest services/reception service was very poor. I guess they only cater to diamond club guests, and treat others like (nothing). Although I must say that cleaning staff, and servers etc were very nice. I left my Gucci sunglasses at the gym and had to go maybe 10 times to guest services, security, and front desk and still didn’t get any follow up. They give you diff stories each time. Was left without glasses in this sun for pretty my 80% of my trip. Agreed, I should have left it as the gym. But they were not helpful at all.

The property was very good overall. The sports activities were always late and the location sometimes wasn’t clear. The sports locations should be clearly labelled such as beach volleyball court 1 or court 2. Again, overall a very good experience.

This was our second trip in 2024 and it was an amazing experience once again. The staff went out of their way to accommodate us. Facilities were clean, food was awesome and we had THE most romantic, once in a lifetime beachside dinner. 4.9 out of 5 stars. Every day has she potential to be a relaxing beachside getaway or an event filled adventure, it’s up to you. We wanted for nothing; except cigars, but I’m sure they would’ve made arrangements had we asked. What we will miss most is going to the coffee shop each morning and watching the sunrise on the veranda overlooking the ocean…. and the spa… Planning another trip next year! Hope this helps.

Want to share emphasis that most of the staff was amazing and attentive. The food was also great. The drinks were so-so & surely had better at other resorts. Check in was not smooth for myself nor the entire group I was with. My room was old, falling apart and had previous guests hair on bed. Whereas, my groups rooms were cleaner, nicer and appeared newer. There was a random odd smell in certain areas, and there was also mold in some restrooms. The place does seem to be working on restorations - which is a plus for future guests. Overall the staff made the stay pleasant however I don’t think I’ll return. Thank you to Royalton staff.
